Description:
Abstract:
Anadromous fish lakes in the Copper River Basin

Anadromous fish lakes in the Copper River Basin, extracted from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's (ADFG) Anadromous Fish Streams coverage 2002 draft.

The original ADFG point coverage for anadromous fish included points representing beginning and end points of fish habitat on streams as well as points representing beginning and end points of lakes used by fish. Ecotrust extracted the Lake type points and found the center point for each lake, eliminating the beginning and end points.

Purpose:
To identify lakes in the Copper River Basin used by anadromous fish species
Supplemental_Information:
Original Abstract:

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game's (ADF&G) Anadromous Fish Streams coverage is derived from the ADF&G's GIS coverage's utilized to produce the Atlas to the Catalog of Waters Important for Spawning, Rearing or Migration of Anadromous Fishes (referred to as the "Atlas") and the Catalog of Waters Important for Spawning, Rearing or Migration of Anadromous Fishes (referred to as the "Catalog"). These data sets are provided for general reference and to aid users in generating various natural resource analyses and products. The coverage depicts the rivers, streams and lakes known to contain anadromous fish species within Alaska (from the mouth to the known upper extent of species usage). It incorporates hydrography and species distribution and use data from a variety of sources. Note that the ADF&G updates this dataset fairly regularly and that stream numbers, locations, extent of cataloged habitat or species utilization of a given stream may change from year to year.

Data contained within this coverage is current as of 8/20/2002 for the DRAFT 2002 revisions to the Atlas to the Catalog of Waters Important for the Spawning, Rearing or Migration of Anadromous Fishes and the Catalog of Waters Important for the Spawning, Rearing or Migration of Anadromous Fishes. This particular data layer is for the Southcentral Region of Alaska.

Original Purpose:

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game's (ADF&G) Anadromous Fish Streams coverage is derived from the ADF&G's GIS coverage's utilized to produce the Atlas to the Catalog of Waters Important for Spawning, Rearing or Migration of Anadromous Fishes (referred to as the "Atlas") and the Catalog of Waters Important for Spawning, Rearing or Migration of Anadromous Fishes (referred to as the "Catalog"). The Atlas and Catalog are used to specify the water bodies referred to in AS 16.05.870, for the protection of waters important for the spawning, rearing or migration of anadromous fishes. The paper Atlas and Catalog documents are adopted into law by reference under 5 AAC 95.010 of the Alaska Administrative Code.

These data are provided for general reference and to aid users in generating various natural resource analyses and products. They are not intended to supplant the paper Atlas and Catalog documents adopted under 5 AAC 95.010. The coverage depicts the rivers, streams and lakes, or parts of them that are known to contain anadromous fish species within Alaska (from the mouth to the known upper extent of species usage). Data includes arc hydrography for the specified portion of the streams and locational point data for the waterbodies with species and lifestage utilization attributes. It incorporates data from a variety of sources including: USGS Digital Line Graph (DLG) hydrography data; Alaska Department of Natural Resources hydrography layer; USFS hydrography layers; and ADF&G stream and species information from the "Catalog" and "Atlas" and agency field data. Information for updating the dataset are submitted annually by area biologist and other staff from state and federal agencies and the private sector.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
The attribute accuracy is tested by visually comparing the source with hard copy printouts and digital display of anadromous stream data on a computer.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Arc topology is present. Arcs crossing quadrangle boundaries were edge matched.
Completeness_Report:
Within this dataset stream mouth point and upper reach point with interconnecting hydrography and species data points are complete statewide for the streams listed in the six regional volumes of the AWC. To be included in the Catalog of Waters Important for the Spawning, Rearing or Migration of Anadromous Fishes (and its associated Atlas), water bodies must be documented as supporting some life function of an anadromous fish species (salmon, trout, char, whitefish, sturgeon, etc.). Anadromous fish must have been seen or collected and identified by a qualified observer. The Catalog and Atlas currently contain over 15,000 streams, rivers or lakes around the state that have been specified as being important for the spawning, rearing or migration of anadromous fish. Based upon thorough surveys of a few drainages it is believed that this number represents less than 50% of the streams, rivers and lakes actually used by anadromous species. It is estimated that at least an additional 20,000 or more anadromous water bodies have not been identified and specified under AS 16.05.870(a).

Attributes for the points and arcs within the coverage are complete. The "barrier" type points are not included in this draft coverage.

Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Point data is heads up or tablet digitized from the best available of the following sources: 1:25,000, 1:63,360 or 1:250,000 USGS maps (DRG or mylar), digital ortho quads or photos, georeferenced aerial photography or other map products. Stream hydrography is derived from the best available existing hydrography source, primarily from USGS Digital Line Graphs (DLG). In areas where DLG data are missing or inaccurate, ADF&G incorporates hydrographic data from the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. BLM or other sources. Modifications to hydrography or digitization of additional hydrography not present in existing layers may have occurred based on aerial photography or information collected in the field by area staff.

Positional accuracy is verified by visually comparing the source information against hard copy printouts and digital display of anadromous stream data on a computer. No accuracy assessment has been performed against real world positions. Some streams may appear as straight lines between the mouth (lower point) and the known upper extent of species usage (upper point) where streams are very short (< 1/8 mile) or the exact location of the channel is not known.

Protracted section boundaries were electronically generated using aliquot part algorithms developed by DNR staff. These digital protracted sections are based on a framework of non-graphic township coordinate files. The programs make calculations from the radian measurements representing township corner coordinates. At the time when these section coverages were constructed, both DNR and BLM stored their radian measurements to twelve positions of accuracy, which allows resolution of less than one meter.

Polygon attributes contain the BLM index number, meridian, township, range, and section number for each section. This coverage is intended to geographically represent BLM's protracted sections for on-shore townships and DNR's protracted sections for off-shore townships, and is not capable of supporting survey quality area calculations.

Protracted section grids are available as ARC/INFO coverages, statewide and by individual meridian (single or double precision), and by individual 1:250,000 quadrangle (double precision). Section corner coordinates are also available in ASCII format in a variety of projections, by meridian. Refer to the order form, "Request for DNR GIS Data," available through the DNR Public Information Centers, to clarify prices and options.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Upper and lower points for the extent of the streams, and species points where present, are digitized from 1:25,000 or 1:63,360 USGS maps or othophotos or 1:250,000 USGS maps where 1:63,360 do not exist. Under the current system this digitizing is done from mylar base maps or on-screen over digital base images. Older points, approximately pre 1988, which have remained unchanged since their addition may have been digitized from paper versions of the maps. Thus the latitude, longitude and legal descriptions of these latter points may stray from their actual locations due to shrinkage of the paper maps prior to digitizing. During the current process of adding hydrography and species points to the coverage many upper and lower points have been moved to correspond to the updated hydrography or base maps. These areas have also undergone additional checks for accuracy. So in areas where species and hydrography data exist confidence in location description data is highest. Latitude, longitudes were calculated by projecting the coverage to decimal degrees and adding the x and y coordinates, then reprojecting to Albers. The legal descriptions have been calculated in ArcView by intersecting the points with ADNR's section grid for Alaska.

The lines that connect the upper and lower points will appear as either straight lines between the points with additional vertices at connecting tributaries or as stream hydrography depending on the area of the state. Currently stream hydrography and species data exist for the Southeast, Southcentral and Southwest regions. The Western, Arctic, and Interior regions of the state are being completed under a current project however, within this data set, they are represented by straight lines and upper and lower points only.

Straight lines between stream points are automatically added and snapped to tributary streams at the time of digitizing the stream points. Where hydrography exists, it was taken from the best available source. At the time the EVOS area was done this was USGS 1:63,360 stream hydrography which was modified and updated by ADNR. Subsequent hydrography was added from USGS DLG files, USFS files, and ADF&G digitized hydro.
