Abstract:

Hunting guide areas in Wrangell-St. Elias NPP that are managed by the Concessions group in the Alaska Support Office. The original maps were digitized in AutoCAD from USGS 1:250000 Quad maps. More recently the drawing file was converted to ArcInfo coverage with a region subclass. A second region subclass was added to show the guide areas for 2000.

Purpose: Provide appropriate scale data to meet park management needs.

The original delineation of the hunting guide areas was done by Russ Lesko in Glennallen on 1:250000 scale USGS quad maps. The maps were then digitized in Anchorage by the Support Office using AutoCAD software. The resulting drawing file was used to print a map for a prospectus to bid on the guide areas. In 1999 the GIS team at AKSO used the DXFARC command in ArcInfo 7.2.1 to create a polygon coverage. Because of the overlapping guide areas a region subclass region.guide97 was built. The original stateplane coordinates were projected to geographic to match with existing GIS base data. Some further processing is still required for the arcs along the park boundary to coincide. A second region subclass region.guide00 was added to show the guide areas for 2000.

In 1999 the GIS team at AKSO used the DXFARC command in ArcInfo 7.2.1 to create a polygon coverage. Because of the overlapping guide areas a region subclass region.guide97 was built. The original stateplane coordinates were projected to geographic to match with existing GIS base data. Some further processing is still required for the arcs along the park boundary to coincide. In 2002 an updated coverage for the year 2000 was UNION'ed with the previous coverage. The new coverage contains 2 region subclasses (guide97 and guide00)
