Abstract:
Statewide lakes assembled by Alaska DNR from seventeen separate files in the USGS 1:2,000,000 Digital Line Graphs (DLG) dataset and include only those polygons with AREA greater than 20 acres (80940 square meters). Polygons with the attribute MIN = 100 or arcs with the attribute LINECODE = 'L' are valid lakes. For data codes and details, please refer to the US Geological Survey Circular 895, 1982. Coverage was further process by Ecotrust (M Goslin) by clipping to Copper River basin and eliminating polygons with MIN = 0 (tile lines).
Purpose:
The purpose for this layer is for mapping lakes at no larger than 1:2,000,000. Because of this scale, lakes smaller than 20 acres were removed.
Supplemental_Information:
Due to the limitation of ARC/INFO software at the time of processing these files, the lakes were originally processed into three groups. Then a framework of arcs surrounding those three groups allowed all the lakes to be united into one statewide lakes coverage. Any lakes which were interested either by the boundaries of the seventeen original DLG files or by DNR's framwork were then edgematched and coded as one lake.

Procedures_Used: This coverage contains all DLG lakes in Alaska (min = 100) that are greater that 20 acres in size (area gt 80940). These lakes were arc reselected from 17 individual coverages wat1-wat17 and then assembled into one coverage. In December 1991 the USGS DLG lakes were reselected from the 17 individual coverages wat1-wat17 and assembled into two coverages named lake1 and lake2. All input covers wat1-wat11 were summarized into lake1 and all input covers wat12-wat17 were summarized into lake2. The selection criteria were: min = 100 (perennial lake or pond) area gt 80940 (lakes greater than 20 acres)

Unfortunately with an ARC reselect the arcs that comprise the reselected polygons lose their coding. This is a resultant that could be eliminated if someone cared to take these same steps again and obtain the arcs defining the lakes in a manner that would preserve their coding.

The lakes that crossed the "boundaries" in the original wat1-wat17 covers were edited and "edgematched" in their new respective coverages. Then neither lake1 nor lake2 could be built because of the 10000 arcs per polygon limitation in ARC 5.0. Subsequently lake2 was split into two covers--lake2 (southcentral) and lake3 (the Alaskan peninsula and the Aleutians). The coverage lake1 was "framed" into two large polygons so that it could be built.

After all this success and the resultant three coverages of lakes I decided on 10-14-92 to put the three coverages into an expanded framework of one coverage. Here are the steps:

Arc: (Now in arcedit calculate all these arcs so linecode = L for lakes- then "get" both arcs and labels from lakes_frame with intersectarcs all- and resolve the one problem area on border between original wat6 and wat10) Arc: build lakes_all poly Building polygons... Arc: labelerrors lakes_all Polygon 1 has 0 label points.
