Abstract:

The purpose of the RS 2477 Project is to identify, research, and document potential rights-of-way (ROW) established under the federal Revised Statute 2477. ROW acquired under RS 2477 provide an access tool for the state to help meet public access needs. The original casefiles containing the historical documentation and land ownership research for each route are located at the DNR, Division of Land, Northern Region Office, Fairbanks. Much of this information was entered into a group of dBase and WordPerfect files, and into DNR's Land Administration System (LAS) tabular database.

Through June 30, 1995 the Division of Land (DOL) RS 2477 Project staff researched the historical use on over 1,200 trails. Of these trails, about 600 were deemed to qualify as RS 2477 ROW. DOL staff transferred these trails from historical maps onto 1:63,360 USGS quadrangle maps and sent them to Support Services Division, Land Records Information Section (LRIS) in Anchorage to be digitized and modified for a statewide coverage.

Since 1995 the Division of Mining, Land and Water has made updates to the data. Trails digitized by the Technical Data and Management Section, then reviewed by Northern Region staff were added.

This data represents Qualified RS2477 Rights-of-Way identified and included in the January 2001 Report to the Legislature.
