Ecotrust is a private non-profit 501(c)(3) organization based in Portland, Oregon. We are dedicated to supporting the development of a conservation economy in the coastal temperate rain forests of North America, a place called "Salmon Nation".
The Copper River watershed is part of "Salmon Nation". Here, for thousands of years, wild salmon have been the unifying element in the development of communities and cultures. When founded in 1991 Ecotrust made a commitment to the Salmon, the traditional cultures and the later settlers of Salmon Nation: to develop a greater understanding of the needs of wild salmon so that they may thrive in a world challenged by growing populations, fragmented habitat, and increased demands for access. We encourage and provide support for collaborative processes that bring agency managers, Native communities, scientists, non-governmental organizations, and community leaders together to nurture opportunities to develop more "Collaborative" area management models. We are engaged in programs in Fisheries, Food and Farms, Forestry, Native Programs and Citizenship that are focused on supporting vibrant local economies while maintaining the long term viability of wild salmon populations.

To begin the process in the Copper River watershed, we have partnered with the Copper River Watershed Project in an effort to develop regional "Knowledge Systems" that consolidate and map important information on resources and human use. Science, traditional ecological knowledge, and existing federal and state information are the cornerstones to our efforts. Maps, GIS tools and economic impact analysis of resource management decisions are our specialty. This first "Draft" of a GIS based knowledge system for the Copper River is intended to serve the citizens of the watershed in better understanding and managing this area of Salmon Nation.
