It is produced for general visual reference and to aid users in generating various natural resource analyses and products. The shapefiles depict the known anadromous fish bearing lakes and streams within Alaska (from the mouth to the known upper extent of species usage). It incorporates data from a variety of sources including: USGS Digital Line Graph (DLG) and National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) hydrography data; Alaska Department of Natural Resources hydrography layer; and ADF&G shapefiles for the "Atlas" and "Catalog". ADF&G updates the Anadromous Streams data regularly. Note that stream numbers, locations, extent of cataloged habitat or species utilization of a given stream may change from year to year. Data for the shapefiles are current as of the 2007 revision of the "Atlas to the Catalog of Waters Important for the Spawning, Rearing or Migration of Anadromous Fishes" and the "Catalog of Waters Important for the Spawning, Rearing or Migration of Anadromous Fishes" effective June 1, 2007. This particular data layer is for the Arctic Region of Alaska Purpose: Anadromous Waters Catalog data are used to specify the water bodies referred to in AS 41.14.870 for the protection of waters important for the spawning, rearing or migration of anadromous fishes. Also programs are run to check species data accuracy by stream and by watershed. Logical_Consistency_Report: ARC topology present. Arcs crossing quadrangle boundaries were edge matched. Completeness_Report: Stream mouth point and upper reach point with interconnecting hydrography arc data are complete for the streams listed in the FDD. Hydrography and species utilization data is completed for streams within the Arctic Region. To be included in the Catalog of Waters Important for the Spawning, Rearing or Migration of Anadromous Fishes (and its associated Atlas), water bodies must be documented as supporting some life function of an anadromous fish species (salmon, trout, char, whitefish, sturgeon, etc.) Anadromous fish must have been seen or collected and identified by a qualified observer. The Catalog and Atlas currently contain around 16,000 streams, rivers or lakes around the state which have been specified as being important for the spawning, rearing or migration of anadromous fish. Based upon thorough surveys of a few drainages it is believed that this number represents less than 50% of the streams, rivers and lakes actually used by anadromous species. It is estimated that at least an additional 20,000 or more anadromous water bodies have not been identified or specified under AS 41.14.870(a). Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Historically point data were digitized from1:63,360 USGS maps where available and 1:250,000 in other areas. Presently stream points are snapped to endpoints of hydrography derived from NHD (National Hydrography Dataset) and where NHD hydrography is not available from USGS DLGs (Digital Line Graphics), hydrography datasets from USFS, ADNR and from data digitized from maps or taken from GPS locations. Modifications were based on detailed aerial photography and information collected from regional experts. Verification of data consists of paper plots or digital pdf graphic files of maps checked against USGS mylar base maps and original submissions. No accuracy assessment has been performed against real world positions. Source_Used_Citation_Abbreviation: I:\AWC\Draft2004\shapes04\arc04_arc Process_Step: Process_Description: Historically upper and lower points depicting the extent of anadromous streams and species points were digitized from 1:63,360 scale USGS maps or 1:250,000 scale USGS maps where 1:63,360 maps did not exist. Older points, approximately pre-1988 may have been digitized from paper versions of these maps. Thus the latitude, longitude and legal descriptions of these latter points may have strayed from their actual locations due to shrinkage of the paper maps prior to digitizing. After 1988, digitizing was done on mylar base maps. At that time the mouth and upper reach points were connected by a straight line. Latitude, longitude and legal descriptions were calculated from a Fortran-based program outside of the GIS environment that derived the locations from BLM AIH files. As digital hydrography became available these straight lines were replaced with hydrography from the best available datasets including those from NHD, USGS, USFS and ADNR. Where no digital source was available for hydrography, arcs were digitized from georectified aerial photos, orthophotos, digital raster graphics (DRG) or from gps points obtained in the field by biologists. Currently upper reach and mouth points are snapped to the endpoints of these added hydrography arcs. During the process of replacing straight lines, many upper and lower points have been moved to correspond to the updated hydrography arcs. These areas have also undergone additional checks for accuracy. Process_Date: 1998 Process_Step: Process_Description: Metadata imported.
