Identification_Information: Citation: Citation_Information: Originator: Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, National Park Service Publication_Date: Title: PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF GBNP STREAMS Edition: Publication_Information: Publication_Place: Publisher: Other_Citation_Details: Online_Linkage: Description: Abstract: This project includes an inventory database of streams and watersheds incorporating physical and temporal characteristics of these features and an associated summary database of over 40 years of stream survey (i.e., freshwater and anadromous species presence, distribution and abundance) information within Glacier Bay National Park (GBNP) and Preserve. An inventory database of physical and spatial characteristics of streams in GBNPP was developed. Stream catchments were categorized by area into logarithmic size classes (i.e., < 1, 1-10, 10-100, and 100-1,000 km2) and 73% of more than 300 stream catchments were < 10 km2. Streams in catchments < 10 km2 were generally short (mean length < 2.5 km), steep (mean gradient > 17%), first-order streams. Between 40 and 68% of streams in each of the four catchment size classes were dominated by surface runoff from snowmelt or precipitation. Lakes fed by surface runoff influenced 19 to 55% of streams in smaller catchments (< 10 km2) while glacial sources dominated stream flow in 38 to 55% of streams in catchments > 10 km2. Although streams within GBNPP were generally short and steep, or dominated by turbid glacial meltwater sources, 60% were predicted to possess salmonid populations. Six of the eight large, low-gradient river systems in the 100 to 1,000 km2 catchment size class are known to provide important salmonid habitat. The database defines the spatial location of stream mouths (from 1:63,360 scale topo. maps) and associated watershed and stream characteristics including stream length, mean gradient, order, watershed size class (logarithmic categories), water source and number of lakes.
