Identification_Information: Citation: Citation_Information: Originator: Glacier Bay Field Station, National Biological Service Publication_Date: Title: SONIC TAGGED PACIFIC HALIBUT LOCATIONS Edition: Publication_Information: Publication_Place: Publisher: Other_Citation_Details: Online_Linkage: Description: Abstract: SUMMARY: Represented here are results of studies on the movement patterns of sonically tracked Pacific halibut. These studies were begun as part of an effort to quantify the ecosystem level effects of the commercial harvest of halibut as part of a 10 year study to evaluate the commercial harvest of halibut in Glacier Bay National Park. The studies represented here were initiated to understand home range and movement patterns, territoriality, site fidelity and inter-year site fidelity in Pacific Halibut. Sonic tags were implanted into the body cavities of Pacific halibut. Two tracking methodologies were used; First, search tracking with 18 month sonic-tags on a daily or weekly basis was used to elucidate the movement patterns of specific categories of individuals in detail. Second, a grid search of the entire lower bay was conducted with 3 year tags on a bimonthly basis to elucidate long term patterns of site fidelity and to understand the movement patterns of individuals who moved over wide areas. ABSTRACT: This database contains locational data on sonic tagged Pacific halibut. It contains evidence for a high degree of site fidelity, existence of a home range, territoriality (i.e. exclusivity of home ranges), inter-year site fidelity and ontogenetic changes in movement patterns. The data was collected by internal implantation of 35 khz sonic tags into the body cavity between the gonads and stomach. Data was collected using surface mounted hydrophones and diver hydrophones with locational fixes done by GPS. These data were collected as part of an effort to quantify the ecosystem level effects of the commercial harvest of halibut as part of a 10 year study to evaluate the commercial harvest of halibut in Glacier Bay National Park. Knowledge of the home range size and shape as well as the degree of site fidelity was lacking for halibut and was determined to be necessary to evaluate what effects the commercial harvest has on Glacier Bay. Access_Constraints: Some Glacier Bay Ecosystem Project data sets may contain data with access constraints. Such areas include sensitive information on the locations of endangered species or cultural artifacts and data which contain private or confidential information. Data sets which are not complete may have access constraints until completion. Please contact the Infromation Management Systems Administrator at the Glacier Bay Field Station for details on any access constraints. Use_Constraints: Some Glacier Bay Ecosystem Project data sets may contain data with use constraints. Such areas include sensitive information on the locations of endangered species or cultural artifacts and data which contain private or confidential information. In addition some data sets are collabrative efforts with outside researchers and represent unpublished work for which we request respect for intellectual rights. Some data sets are not complete and if access is given the use may be restricted until completion. There is an average error of,about 20 meters in the GPS fixes. However some fixes may be,off more than 100 meters. In 1995 the use of Y-encrypted,code GPS was begun. The error of this GPS was < 15 meters,90% of the time with an average error of 5 meters. Some, critical positions were averaged and this is mentioned in,the comments resulting in better than 5 meters accuracy.
