Tongass Land Status Data Set
1. Data Set Identity: Land Status
Data set name: landstat
2. Originator: US Forest Service
3. Date: Current as of 1995
4. Edition: n/a
5. Description: This obtained from the Tongass National Forest
includes owner, status and parcel boundaries for all lands within the TNF
boundary. These parcel boundaries are based on legal descriptions, plats,
and other sources drafted onto 1:31,680 scale base maps.
For areas outside the TNF boundary the courser resolution coverage "akstatus"
should be used. The DNR dataset is coarser in resolution (i.e., to the
nearest section) than the datasets available through the Tongass NF. Alaska
DNR bases their understanding of land status on a statewide digital (but
non-geographic) database maintained by the BLM. In general, these records
are thematically accurate but do not carry specific parcel boundaries.
At a regional level of analysis, the coarse nature of this data is acceptable,
but the user should recognize this limitations of this source data.
Land ownership and status is dynamic, particularly in Alaska, where land
is still being transferred from federal to state and Native corporation
ownership, and from state to private ownership under the Alaska Statehood
Act, the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, and various state homestead
and land disposal programs. Due to the many and frequent changes in land
ownership and status, Interrain Pacific recommends obtaining updated information
from the source agencies.

II. DATA QUALITY INFORMATION
1. Attribute Accuracy Explanation:
Interrain Pacific has not conducted any formal accuracy assessments on
this data layer or the source datasets.
One limitation of this data layer stems from the dynamic nature of land
ownership and status in Alaska. Continuing land conveyance and transfer
processes quickly render land status layers out-of-date. As such, Interrain
Pacific recommends obtaining frequent updates from the source agencies.
Applications requiring greater accuracy should use the land ownership boundaries
as guides but seek additional, more accurate sources for the final word
on land status.
2. Attribute Accuracy: __________%
__X__Unknown_____
_X_no accuracy assessment performed on dataset
3. Description of Data Completeness: This data base is synoptic, but
is dynamic and likely does not reflect a complete understanding of current
land status.
4. Minimum Mapping Unit: ____ n/a___
5. Positional Accuracy Comments: Data covering the Tongass NF can be used at 1:63.360 scale.

V. ENTITY AND ATTRIBUTE INFORMATION
1. Attribute Labels: The table below lists
the three-digit codes assigned to different land ownership categories.
The coding system is hierarchical; the first digit describes the general
landowner category (e.g. federal (FED), state, regional corporation (REGION),
etc.), the second digit describes the specific landowner (e.g. National
Forest, Village Corporation, etc.).
