Tongass National Forest Timber Type Data Set

I. IDENTIFICATION INFORMATION

1. Data Set Identity: Tongass National Forest Timber Type
Data set names: anm_tim, jun_tim, sit_tim, yak_tim

2. Originator: Tongass National Forest

3. Date:

4. Edition: n/a

5. Description: The Tongass National Forest Timber Type database is a timber oriented vegetation layer based on interpretation of aerial photography. It is the most detailed digital vegetation information currently available for substantial areas within the greater Glacier Bay ecosystem. The database contains information about timbered areas including species composition, stand density, stocking levels, stand class size, and volume. Many of these timber-oriented descriptions can be useful as surrogates for important ecological variables such as structural information about a given stand. The database also contains less detailed information on non-forest vegetation and cover types.

6. Data Set Status:

___In preparation Anticipated Completion Date_____

_X_Completed and operational

___On going Update Frequency:____

Data Set Status Comments: No updates to this data layer are anticipated. The Tongass National Forest is currently developing new vegetation data sets for their lands.

7. Geographic Coverage Description: The Tongass NF Timber Type data layer covers the Yakutat, Juneau, Hoonah and Sitka Ranger Districts, and Admiralty Island National Monument.

II. DATA QUALITY INFORMATION

1. Attribute Accuracy Explanation: Interrain Pacific has not conducted any formal accuracy assessments on this data layer or the source datasets.

Timber typing was based on original photography from the mid-1980's. As such, some of the information may be out of date. For some types of information (e.g. stable plant communities, water bodies) dated information is acceptable; vegetation subject to more rapid change is problematic. Additionally, recent assessments by the USFS have identified problems with estimation of timber volume based on this coverage.

2. Attribute Accuracy: __________% __X__Unknown_____
_X_no accuracy assessment performed on dataset

3. Description of Data Completeness: The data are complete for areas within the Tongass National Forest
