  Description:
    Abstract: The Yakutat Community Classification and mapping project was a three year cooperative project between the USDA Forest Service and the Alaska Natural Heritage Program and represents field work completed in 1991-1992. Following field collection Twinspan and Decorana ecological statistic programs were used to identify 53 community types from 361 vascular plant species collected. Paradox database was used to house plot information. Plot locations were automated in a GIS by Forest Service. Purpose of this study was to conduct inventory to gather ecosystem information from a largely unknown portion of Tongass National Forest lands.

      Process_Description: Field data was collected according to USDA Forest Service,Pacific Northwest and Alaska, dividing the Yakutat forelands,into nine landform types. Within each unit field survey was,conducted stratifying vegetation using air photos. Plot,sampling was conducted within each of these homogenoeus,sites. Vegetation and soils were sampled, using standard,methodology. Field sheet data was entered into Paradox and,data ported to ECOAID ecology software programs. Twin span,and Decorana were further used to group vegetation units,based on species occurrence data. Plot data was entered into,the GIS ARC/INFO system.
