Directions for Using Online GIS
Using the On-Line mapping service is quite simple and can prove to be a valuable resource. The tools provided make it possible to zoom in on any area on the given map and find locations by street name. Furthermore, you can at any time create a pre-structured map and send it to your printer.
Visible Themes
The on-line maps are often made up of several data layers referred to as themes. Each theme available for viewing is identified in the legend. The check box indicates whether the theme will draw or not. If you wish to display a theme make sure it is checked. Click the "Redraw Map" button to reflect the changes you have made.
Scale Dependant Themes
The streets theme is considered scale dependent. That is, it will or will not appear on the map or legend depending on what scale the map is being drawn. The purpose for making themes scale dependent is to avoid confusion due to too much detail of any particular theme as well as to reduce the drawing time.
Tools
Toggles between the Layers and the Legend views. The Layers view allows you to determine what themes are drawn. The Legend view allows you to identify the features of the map.
Zoom in or out from the location you click, or the box you define on the map.
Pan the map display by dragging the tool.
Query street names by clicking on this tool and typing the street name in the window. This query is case sensitive. If the exact spelling is not known, use the first letter or letters to find a list of street names.

When the query is completed, a table will appear displaying the records that match. A table may contain many records for the same street name. This is because each street segment is an individual record. The corresponding street segments will be highlighted in yellow on the map. Each record has a unique 'Rec' number in the first column of the table. Clicking on one of these 'Rec' numbers, the map will zoom to that street segment and highlight it dark orange. To clear your selection, click on the eraser tool described below.
