Salmon Diversity in the North Pacific (by Ecoregion), 2004
Keywords: Fish
(From the book Atlas of Pacific Salmon: The First Map-based Status Assessment of Salmon in the North Pacific)
The center of range for the Oncorhynchus species is generally the Gulf of Alaska. From the Russian coasts of Magadan, Kamchatka and Koryakia, across the Aleutians, and down the North American coastline to Washington, speciation within the genus is high. Note that Kamchatka is the only region to host all seven species. Conversely, we can also see how the edges of the range contain limited speciation. Because this map is ecoregionally based, it may overrepresent diversity within a given ecoregion in cases where one or a few river basin host exceptional diversity.
